O.K., I admit it. Over the years some guitars come through the shop and I just have to keep them for myself a while. I usually put them back in the shop, but I am so tempted by really great guitars to ‘cherry pick’ them for myself. Alas, I have bills to pay and can’t keep them all! This is one of those guitars. I REALLY wanted to keep this one. Ever since Vicente Amigo delighted us with his 1988 Reyes, Reyes in general, and 80’s Reyes in particular have been highly desired. With Reyes essentially not accepting new orders on his 22 year waiting list, most players find themselves searching for ANY Reyes, let alone a really good one. As someone who at one time owned six Reyes myself, I think I know his guitars as well as anyone. Here is what’s so about this one: Many Reyes are loud, many Reyes are punchy, not all Reyes make music. This one is one of the ones that does. It is musical, and well played in giving it that ‘woody’ almost ‘vintage’ sound I write about so often. And the peg’s, I lOVE these pegs, and usually I just can’t deal with them, too finicky. These peg’s tune like machines, I have never seen anything like it. This is the first peg guitar that I, a devout ‘machine tuner guy’, would enjoy owning. The back and sides are in excellent condition and the top has only minor localized playing wear. If you don’t love this guitar, maybe you shouldn’t be looking for a Reyes. This is what Reyes is all about.
