Tom Blackshear prides himself as being one of the best flamenco builders in the US, and has made a name for himself lately with his Reyes model blancas. These were based on an absolutely killer 2003 Reyes I lent him to copy. (He drew the plans of that guitar for the Guild of American Luthiers, and many happy luthiers have used them to build great Reyes-inspired instruments.) Tom's Reyes models were, in the opinion of some players, as good as the original. Tom has used what he learned from that guitar here, in his new personal model. It uses the same plantilla, or body shape and dimensions, and a very similar bracing pattern, to yield a guitar that sounds quite similar to the 1987 Reyes I recently sold. Not quite as aggressive as some Reyes guitars I've had, but very beautiful in tone, very musical, extremely easy to play, and expertly crafted. This guitar is in virtually new condition, with only the slightest normal playing wear on the golpeador, visible only at the right angle, from Tom and one of his very good clients playing the guitar. The tuners are premium level Gotohs, a nice finishing touch. If you've been dreaming of a Reyes but don't have $15,000 to spend, you should give this guitar a try. ©2007 Classic Guitars International • All rights reserved |
