NEW JAKOB LEBISCH SPRUCE COMPOSITE (DOUBLE) TOP
Top: Spruce composite (double) top
Back and sides: Rosewood
Tuners: Klaus Scheller
Jakob is one of a VERY few superb German double top builders often referred to as ‘the next Dammann’. I met Jakob when he was a student at the conservatory in Frankfurt. He was serious about his studies, but was also building fantastic solid top fan braced guitars that many felt comfortably exceeded the guitars of such veteran builders as Antonio Marin Montero even. Like many of the more talented German builders Jakob too became fascinated with the composite/double top style of guitar invented by Matthias Dammann and he began building his own version. Jakob was inspired by the earlier Dammann’s with the all wood cores, and so he builds in that style. His craftsmanship is impeccable reminding me of the work of Dammann and Michel Brück in fact, very high praise in that regard. Word has spread about his guitars, with many Dammann owners now on his ten year wait list.
This guitar is absolutely superb, crisp musical trebles and powerful sonorous basses, with the sweetness of a Spanish Marin Montero, but the power/projection/dynamic range reminiscent of a Dammann. The French Polish shellac finish is brilliant, the craftsmanship is impeccable, a refined and powerful Spruce composite top that easily impresses.
