Matthias tells me that as far as he is aware this is the only Spruce Dammann Double Top in North America at this time (well OK, there are TWO Spruce Dammann double tops now, but I am fortunate enough to own the second one which is my own personal guitar and it is INCREDIBLE). Of course his Cedar Double Top guitars are considered to be the finest double top guitars in the world, literally in a class by themselves. The list of artists who have recognized this reads like a virtual ‘who’s who’ of the classical guitar world.

But what most people don’t know is that Matthias loves Spruce too! I have had the pleasure of representing at least one other Spruce Dammann, years ago, and it was a Spruce solid top. Still to this day I remember it as one of the finest Spruce guitars ever in the shop. So, when Matthias shared with me that he would enjoy building some special Spruce Double Tops I was very excited. Perhaps not surprisingly this guitar exceeded all my expectations.

Visually it is one of the most beautiful Dammann guitars I have seen. The subtle color of the Spruce top accentuates the beauty of the already stunning rosette. Matthias, with his artistic eye, added just the right amount of color to the Shellac finish so that the rosette and Rosewood back and sides compliment each other in a subtle and very organic fashion. Just gorgeous.

But as beautiful as she is, the real treat is to hear her. Like all Dammann Double Top instruments she has an ‘all encompassing’ presence when played, surrounding the player, and filling the room, with lush and beautiful tones. Really quite unlike anything you have heard. The trebles and basses never fight each other, but instead harmonize perfectly. The basses, cello-like as usual, support supple,liquid, full, round trebles that are obviously ‘Spruce’ but which somehow manage to already sound as if the guitar has been played in for years. Rich and warm for a Spruce guitar already, I can only imagine how she will unfold over the years as she is played. A Dammann trademark is the absolutely incredible ease with which you can play, so powerfully responsive that the notes feel like you have only to 'think' about touching the string and they fly off as a race horse released from the starting gate. This allows your right hand to be soooo relaxed because so very little effort is required of it. Many players, myself included, have had the delightful task of noticing how playing a Dammann brings a heightened ability to 'relax' your hand as you play in a way that is so powerful it can totally transform how you play. I can't say enough about these guitars.

This is the pinnacle of Spruce Double Tops, and once again Matthias has set the standard by which all other Spruce Double Top guitars will be measured. A truly unique, and very rare, opportunity to enjoy a Spruce guitar of the highest possible caliber.
