Paulino personally delivered this guitar to me when he visited me recently here in the USA, he also brought a wonderful "Royal", like the Royal this guitar has a Cedar soundboard. This guitar once again proves why Paulino is considered to be one of the finest Luthiers in the world, let alone Spain. Admittedly he starts out with a huge advantage by possessing one of the oldest and most impressive stores of aged woods that is to be found anywhere. His youngest soundboards are often a decade or more older than the oldest soundboards of many Luthiers. Such is the case with this guitar having a specially selected soundboard more than 20 years old. The sides are doubled, with Indian Rosewood, and this design along with his unique modified fan braced system produces volume that one expects from lattice guitars, but fully retains the much sought after trademark Bernabe/Spanish character. This Especial has a rich, romantic and highly expressive tone, not at all bright, but warm and profound, with well balanced trebles and basses that have presence and clarity without sacrificing the richness that cedar fans love. The Especial is Paulino's best selling style combining many of the attributes of his highly praised "Royal" but at a much more affordable price, and this guitar is one of the finest examples of an Especial that he has provided me to date. Every time I receive an Especial I am tempted to keep it for myself, they are that good. Sadly for me I can't keep every guitar I fall in love with much as I might wish I could. Flawlessly crafted in every detail, and finished in a glossy French Polish/Shellac. Perfect. Really.
